Filmmakers Submission FAQ

Q: What can I expect for SF49?

A: We will be returning online and in-person on February 14th-19th, 20234 Our virtual and in-person venues will feature unique and separate programming, so people can experience different things no matter where they decide to tune in.

Q: Where will the live events be?

A: The Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA 02144. Plus we will hold events at Comicazi Comic Book Store, The Burren Irish Pub, The Dragon Lair and The Goods. All within two blocks of each in Davis Square Somerville, one of the coolest neighborhoods in metro Boston.

Q: How does one submit a film?

A: Film Freeway is our official submission portal. Submissions are now closed for SF48. Please subscribe to our newsletter to hear about when to submit for SF49 in 2024.

Q: What are the criteria for submissions?

A: Film Freeway has the specifics please check there for details, but briefly any science fiction story capable of being screened is in our wheelhouse.

Q: Will my film be screened live or virtually?

A: Only a select number of films will be screened in person. Any films that will be virtually screened will have industry grade protections (DRM) that can be mutually modified.

Q: Will there be networking events?

A: Yes. There will be filmmaker-to-filmmaker events, Q&As, industry confabs and plain old post-screening get togethers.

Q: Are there awards?

A: Yes. There are 10 awards given every year as well as 25 Certificates of Distinction.

Q: My film is not finished, should I submit?

A: Go ahead you like. We accept ‘Works-in-Progress”. Although we would need to discuss details. We also allow filmmakers to make changes in their films up to our deadlines.

Q: When will uploading of films begin

A: Those details will be announced shortly but we anticipate that film size will be roughly 20 Gb.
